The day has finally come for me to announce that users can now add books to their reading list, as well as integrate with their Goodreads ‘to-read’ list! Well, it has been for a few weeks, but I’ve never formally announced or explained how it works. Many users have already been exploring this feature and have given great feedback, such as multiple lists, better statistics, and easier management of books in the list. I am working on these features and will introduce them over the winter break. In the meantime, get your reading list started!
Step 1. If you don’t have an account, create one
I worked on making this easier over the past few weeks, simply log in with Facebook or supply a username, your name, and an email address. If you don’t feel comfortable, simply put your username where it asks for your first name.
Step 2. Look up books and add them
Use our website like you normally would and find the page for a book you want to read. In this example, I will use Big Magic. On the book page, all you have to do is click the text ‘Add to my list’.
Step 3. Explore your list
The navigation bar in the upper right corner has a new link called ‘My List’. Click on it and you will see all of the books you have added to your list and statistics about them! From here you can also remove books from your list. Share this with your friends and compare lists!
Step 4. (Optional) Import your Goodreads ‘to-read’ list
This step is a little bit more complex, so bear with me. If you haven’t already done so, you will need to update your Goodreads ID on your profile page. To do this, click on ‘My Account’ in the navigation bar and under Profile click ‘Edit’.
From here you will go into ‘Extra Options’. I wish this were placed in a more prominent location, but I am only a hobbyist web developer.
The resulting page has a spot for you to enter in your Goodreads ID. To find this, go to Goodreads, log in, and go to your profile. On your profile page, your Goodreads ID will be at the end of the URL in your address bar. Copy and paste this into the box for your Goodreads ID on ReadingLength.
Now, navigate to your list on ReadingLength and click on ‘Import ‘to-read’ list from Groodreads’. The next page might take a while to load, but that’s because the website is hard at work importing all of the book data.
When this is done, you will see a page that tells you how many books were imported and you can navigate back to your reading list.
Thank you for patiently waiting while I spent weeks figuring it out and finding time for implementation. The website feels a little bit more complete now, what we have to work on is building up the community!
