
Joseph Edkins
Also known as
[English] Joseph Edkins (b. 1823 in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, England; d. 1905 in Shanghai, Kiangsu, China) was a British Protestant missionary who spent 57 years in China, 30 of them in Beijing (Peking). As a Sinologue, he specialized in Chinese religions. Edkins was also a linguist, a translator, and a philologist. He wrote many books about the Chinese language and the Chinese religions especially Buddhism. Als Sinologe war er spezialisiert auf chinesische Religionen. Edkins war auch Sprachwissenschaftler, Übersetzer und Philologe. Er schrieb viele Bücher über die chinesische Sprache und die chinesischen Religionen, insbesondere den Buddhismus.
