20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is one of the premiere adventure novels and one of Jules Verne's greatest books. In 1866, the government assembles an expedition to find and destroy a mysterious sea monster spotted by ships of several nations. Professor Pierre Aronnax, the narrator of the story, joins the expedition along with Canadian master harpoonist Ned Land. The expedition finds the monster after a long search and then attacks the beast, which damages the ship's rudder. The protagonists are then hurled into the water and grasp hold of the "hide" of the creature, which they find, to their surprise, to be a submarine very far ahead of its time. They are quickly captured and brought inside the vessel, where they meet its enigmatic creator and commander, Captain Nemo.
