Als Schriftstellerin und Übersetzerin leistete sie Bedeutendes; als Frau setzte sie neue Maßstäbe eines ungebundenen Lebens. Sie brach mit den gesellschaftlichen Konventionen des Kaiserreichs und galt als Verkörperung einer «erotischen Rebellion». Ihre bohemehafte Existenz, damals von vielen Menschen als unerhört empfunden, wirkt aus heutiger Sicht geradezu exemplarisch: als gelebtes Beispiel eines neuen weiblichen Selbstbewusstseins.
