Les traducteurs des ##Sept fous## ont souligné la modernité d'Arlt, fils d'émigrés austro-allemands, et la difficulté à traduire son style sauvage, hâtif et précipité. Arlt est la figure inverse de Borges, un Jean Genet sud-américain.
