Volgens Brouwer moeten de handboken niet worden gelezen als een afspiegeling van de negentiende-eeuwse architectuurpraktijk, maar zijn ze de motor van vernieuwing. het kennisideal van de handboeken liep vooruit op de architectuurpraktijk, die de hele negentiende eeuw ambachtelijk bleef. In het boek is een uitgebreide bibliografie van de Nederlandse architectuurhandboeken opgenomen.
