Das in zwei Teilbände gegliederte Studienbuch 'Kunst der Frührenaissance in Italien' versteht sich als Einführung, die sich an Studierende und Lehrende der Kunstgeschichte sowie an Interessierte aus angrenzenden Disziplinen wendet. Es vermittelt eine historische Orientierung über die gattungsspezifischen Probleme von Werken der Skulptur und der Malerei des Quattrocento. In exemplarischen Einzelanalysen werden die ikonologische Konzeption und die Prinzipien der ästhetischen Inszenierung ebenso ausführlich herausgearbeitet wie ihr sozialer und politischer Gehalt. In dem der Skulptur gewidmeten Band 1 werden Hauptwerke von Nanni di Banco, Donatello, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Jacopo della Quercia, Andrea del Verrocchio, Bernardo Rossellino, Pietro Lombardo, Desiderio da Settignano und Niccolò dell' Arca.
