"En 1773 la ciudad de Santiago de Goathemala fue sacudida por varios temblores, causantes de grandes estragos, que destruyeron o dañaron una buena parte de sus edificios y su infraestructura. Aunque algunos pobladores insistieron en reconstruir;a. el rey Carlos III decretó su traslado. Con este motivo se nombró una comisión que debia encargarse de buscar el lugar idóneo para fundar la nueva metrópoli. En esta publicación se reúne una selección de planos y mapas, que resumen este proceso y sirvieron a las autoridades coloniales para asergurarse de que la nueva ciudad contara con los recursos necesarios. Los documentos que se presentan fueron seleccionadas por un equipo multidisciplinario de investigadores, que los analizaron acuciosamente desde la perspectiva de sus distintas disciplinas"--Inside front cover.
