[Letter to] Dear friend Webb

Description

May reports that the U. S. government has resorted to direct taxation. He sends a newspaper clipping containing a letter by Professor Francis William Newman that prophesied the movements of the Confederate armies. He describes "The New York Evening Post" and says that he received photographs from Sojourner Truth. May gives an account of Robert E. Lee's invasion of Pennsylvania. He deplores the demobilization of certain Union troops and condemns Moncure Daniel Conway's correspondence with James Murray Mason, the Confederate Ambassador to England. May says that he thinks the English government will try to force a peace between the North and the South.
