Description

May asks Clarke if he has read the biography of William Lloyd Garrison that was written by Garrison's children. He discusses Garrison's similarity to Peter the Hermit and says that he thinks Garrison's great virtue was his avoidance of compromise. May says that he believes slavery would have continued to grow if the Garrisonian abolitionists had not stopped it. He discusses Dr. William Ellery Channing's claim to the leadership of the anti-slavery movement. He says the Unitarian writers have ignored the biography of William Lloyd Garrison.
