Description
The disintegration of a tailings dam at the abandoned Matachewan Consolidated Gold Mines and subsequent tailings spill into the Montreal River were discussed. One week after the dam burst due to heavy rainfall, the tailings had travelled 50 km downstream and raised the river's lead level to 13 times acceptable limits. The environmental impacts on the biota and local communities were discussed along with the actions being taken by the government to deal with the spill.
