Description

Sailor's fascinating and well written first hand account of his adventures as a young man sailing from Boston around South America to the west coast of Vancouver Island. In Nootka Sound they attempted to trade for furs. However the crew enraged the natives; Jewitt and another sailor taken captive after natives slaughter all the rest of the crew. Kept as a slave by the chief, Jewitt is married to Nootka princess and gains respect and friendship of his master. After three years, he learns their language and customs before eventually finding a way of escape. The descriptions of life, beliefs, language and customs of the Nootka are detailed.
