Description
Caspar Wolf (1735-1783) zählt zu den wichtigsten Malern der Vorromantik in der Schweiz und gilt als Pionier der Hochgebirgsmalerei. Angezogen vom Einmaligen, Merkwürdigen und Grossartigen unternahm Wolf nach 1773 verschiedene Studienreisen ins Gebirge und widmete der genauen Naturbeobachtung ebensoviel Aufmerksamkeit wie der Darstellung des Erhabenen. Caspar Wolfs Hauptwerk umfasst eine beinahe zweihundert Ölbilder zählende Galerie der Schweizer Alpen. Nach Abschluss seines grossen Alpen-Projektes reiste er auf der Suche nach neuen Themen und Aufträgen ins Rheinland und fand in der Darstellung weiter Landschaften, Stadtpanoramen und herrschaftlicher Schlösser neue Herausforderungen. Als wichtigem Vertreter der Aufbruchzeit zwischen Aufklärung und Romantik wird Caspar Wolf in der europäischen Kunstgeschichte immer grössere Beachtung geschenkt.
