The second volume of the Stichting Kastelenstudies Nederland is a fact. Eleven articles are a reflection of recent research. Some articles connect seamlessly to current events. This is the report of a recent investigation into the Valkhof in Nijmegen, which provided new insights into the two ring walls around the complex. There is also attention to the effects of World War II on castles and outbuildings. This is a call for more research as a prelude to the year 2020, in which it is 75 years since this war ended. Then a lot of attention will also be paid to this part of the heritage that has not come out of the battle unscathed. In addition to research into specific castles, for example a 'forgotten' research into the building history of the Muiderslot, there is also room for interdisciplinary research this time, in the immediate vicinity of Duivenvoorde Castle, where garden history and archeology reinforce each other. History, building history and archeology come together in a contribution on wooden castle structures in the period 1250-1450.0 In addition, there is attention for outbuildings in Kralingen, dog graves on castles and for castles along area boundaries. Finally, attention is drawn to 'empty' castle sites, where there are no (any more) indications for construction on the site itself, but where finds in the canal do point to it. De tweede bundel van de Stichting Kastelenstudies Nederland is een feit. Een elftal artikelen vormen een weerslag van recent onderzoek. Sommige artikelen sluiten naadloos aan op de actualiteit. Zo wordt verslag gedaan van recent onderzoek naar het Valkhof te Nijmegen, dat nieuwe inzichten opleverde over de twee ringmuren rondom het complex. Ook is er aandacht voor de effecten van de Tweede Wereldoorlog op kastelen en buitenplaatsen. Het betreft hier een aanzet tot meer onderzoek als opmaat voor het jaar 2020, waarin het 75 jaar geleden is dat deze oorlog werd beëindigd. Dan zal er tevens veel aandacht worden besteed aan dit deel van het erfgoed dat niet ongeschonden uit de strijd gekomen is. Naast onderzoek naar specifieke kastelen, bijvoorbeeld een 'vergeten' onderzoek naar de bouwgeschiedenis van het Muiderslot, is er ook deze keer plaats voor interdisciplinair onderzoek, en wel in de directe omgeving van kasteel Duivenvoorde, waarbij tuinhistorie en archeologie elkaar versterken. Historie, bouwhistorie en archeologie komen samen in een bijdrage over houten kasteelstructuren in de periode 1250-1450.0Daarnaast is er aandacht voor buitenplaatsen in Kralingen, hondengraven op kastelen en voor kastelen langs gebiedsgrenzen. Tot slot wordt er aandacht gevraagd voor'lege'kasteelterreinen, waarbij er op het terrein zelf geen aanwijzingen (meer) zijn voor bebouwing, maar waar vondsten in de gracht daar wel degelijk op wijzen.
