PUBLISHER’S PREFACE DR BARRIE O. PETTMAN Burke’s Landed Gentry 19th Edition is the first English edition of the Landed Gentry series for more than 30 years. The Ridings of York is the second Volume in the Edition to appear and continues the theme of integrating contemporary people of distinction with the historic Peerage and Landed Gentry families that was introduced in Burke’s Landed Gentry 19th Edition Volume I The Kingdom in Scotland. To most people, regional identity is as important as the national kind. The Ridings of York provides an excellent opportunity for Burke’s to continue our theme of expanding, updating and modernising this iconic historic reference source whilst honouring the unique character of the Yorkshire region. We have thus created a successful blend which exemplifies Yorkshire society today. Just as Yorkshire has undergone enormous changes over the last one hundred and fifty years, as vividly told by Michael Bradford in his article on the history of Yorkshire, so too have our inclusion criteria for Burke’s Landed Gentry. Over the past thirty years the original form of land-ownership derived power has changed as old families died out and their estates were sold. Such estates were often bought by new families from commercial backgrounds as has been the pattern from time immemorial, so there is nonetheless a very real continuity. In this 19th Edition we have continued to include all figures of hereditary importance, such as peers and landed families, however, the majority of entrants are successful contemporary Yorkshire people of distinction. Many of these by virtue of 21st Century values and drivers have attained high office without any necessary initial or subsequent benefit of land or title.
