Der Valenzianer Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923) gehört zu den bedeutendsten spanischen Malern der Jahrhundertwende. Sorolla, der Maler des Lichts und des fl üchtigen Moments, ist in Deutschland nach wie vor weitgehend unbekannt geblieben. Im Mittelpunkt der ersten deutschen Monographie über Joaquín Sorolla steht sein 'Panorama Spaniens' ('Visión de España'), vierzehn großformatige Gemälde, die er von 1912 bis 1919 für die 'Hispanic Society of America' in New York gemalt hat. Sie zeigen spanische Regionen, wie Sorolla sie gesehen und in seinem unverkennbaren Personalstil festgehalten hat. Das 'Panorama Spaniens' ist von hohem künstlerischem wie ethnographischem Wert und als gigantisches künstlerisches Projekt einzigartig in der Malerei der Neuzeit.
