A reviewer said of Perkins that he was “… a careful student of the early history of the country, and contributed many articles to the periodical literature of his day on the subject of Indian history and border warfare, which have been collected … [in the subject volume]”. About two-thirds of Vol. 1 consists of a biography of Perkins, followed by a section of verses, and then ‘tales’. Vol. 2 is made up entirely of ‘historical sketches’.
