Schon lange hat die Forschung erkannt, dass Wirken und Werk des württembergischen Baumeisters Heinrich Schickhardt (1558-1631) im Horizont der europäischen Architektur- und Technikgeschichte gewürdigt werden müssen. Eine zweitägige Tagung in Herrenberg 2008 anlässlich des 450. Geburtstages Schickhardts, deren Ausgangspunkt eine gemeinsame Ausstellung des Hauptstaatsarchivs und des Museo Leonardiano war, in welcher ein Vergleich der beiden grossen Techniker Schickhardt und da Vinci im Mittelpunkt stand, arbeitete die Bedeutung beider Künstler im vormodernen Europa heraus.
