Description

Within the large and versatile Dutch silversmith art, that of Maastricht occupies a special position. For centuries, the city was culturally and economically mainly connected to the city of Liège and far from 'Dutch'. Jewelers have been active in Maastricht for at least the fourteenth century. This book gives an innovative look at Maastricht's silver work, which places masterpieces from a glorious past in relation to contemporary designs. The origins and signature of the various collections in the Bonnefanten museum are discussed. In addition, approx. 20 highlights are highlighted and connections are made to other objects and themes, such as use and technology, urban pride and family relations, Maastricht versus other cities, religion and family crests. Binnen de grote en veelzijdige Nederlandse zilversmeedkunst neemt die van Maastricht een bijzondere positie in. De stad was gedurende eeuwen cultureel en economisch vooral verbonden met de stad Luik en verre van 'Hollands'. Edelsmeden zijn al minstens sinds de veertiende eeuw actief in Maastricht. Dit boek geeft een vernieuwende blik op Maastrichts zilverwerk, dat topstukken uit een roemrijk verleden plaatst in relatie tot de hedendaagse ontwerpen. Er wordt stilgestaan bij de ontstaansgeschiedenis en de signatuur van de verschillende collecties in het Bonnefanten museum. Daarnaast worden ca. 20 topstukken uitgelicht en worden verbindingen gelegd naar andere voorwerpen en thema?s, zoals gebruik en techniek, stedelijke trots en familierelaties, Maastricht tegenover andere steden, religie en familiewapens. Maastrichtse zilver stond bekend om zijn onberispelijke kwaliteit en is ook daarom tot vandaag een geliefd verzamelgebied.
