Primo Levi a longtemps pensé qu'écrire avait été pour lui, l'équivalent d'une cure analytique et qu'après Auschwitz, il avait pu mener, grâce à son écriture, une vie d'homme libre. Mais il a découvert les limites obligées du témoignage, que ce soit le sien ou celui d'autres survivants, et il en a été accablé. Parmi ces autres, il s'est intéressé au philosophe Jean Améry et au psychanalyste Bruno Bettelheim. Sa férocité à leur égard a peut-être été l'un des derniers remparts qu'il a tenté d'ériger pour ne pas voir et ne pas entendre la vérité qui était pourtant la sienne et qu'aucun témoin n'a pu complètement saisir.
