[Letter to] Dear friend Webb

Description

May explains why he has not written more frequently, citing the death of his father, the presence of many house guests, and excessive heat as reasons. He discusses the unusual heat at length and says that his mother is in poor health. May describes the activities of his youthful guests. In a continuation of the letter that is dated, August 26, May mentions a Mr. Emerson, aged 99; various neighbors; and the deaths of Henry Clarke Wright and the son of John Edward May. May comments on Wendell Phillips' chances of becoming Governor of Massachusetts and his use of the "National Anti-Slavery Standard" for political purposes. He discusses the Franco-Prussian War and the American attitude toward France.
