Description
Last year it was in the news how seventy years ago Moluccans were forced to be sent to the Netherlands. This book highlights one of the camps where they were subsequently housed: the CC-polder residential area, a place far away against the Dollarddijk in Groningen. In the vast Carel Coenraadpolder you will still find an unexpected forest that bears the name Ambonezenbosje. 'Between the dikes' describes in words and images the memories of the Moluccans who lived there from 1953 to 1961. The residents of the CC polder celebrated marriages, births and holidays, mourned dead children, made music and grew their own vegetables. The children played on the dike and in the salt marshes. The little ones went to school there. The stay was tough for the adults. It was cold and windy, the barracks were too small for so many people and the facilities were lousy. In addition, they felt abandoned by the government. The promise that they would return to the Moluccas after six months had been broken and the forced resignation from the army bothered the former soldiers. Still, they made the best of it together and formed a close-knit community. Until they had to leave again at the end of 1961. Whether they wanted to or not. Painter Maike van der Kooij and author Marjan Brouwers visited former residents of the residential area at home or walked through the bush with them while talking. Inspired by their stories, Maike painted a series of portraits and panels that are exhibited together and are depicted in this book. Marjan wrote about the history of the residential area, the Moluccan residents and their personal memories. Exhibition: Galerie Bo Lumen, Finsterwolde, the Netherlands (6.11-28.11.2021)
