Het zoeken naar de ziel loopt als een rode draad door het oeuvre van Jan Mankes (1889-1920). Als kunstenaar wilde hij één worden met zijn onderwerp. Met de dieren uit zijn schilderijen had hij vaak een persoonlijke band; hij kon ze pas afbeelden als hun ziel hem eigen was geworden. Museum Belvédère toont deze zomer schilderijen en werken op papier die Mankes maakte van de dieren en vogels in en om zijn huis, op een steenworp afstand van waar nu het museum staat.
