Description
Richard Gerstl gilt als der erste österreichische Expressionist, der noch vor Egon Schiele und Oskar Kokoschka ein Œuvre voller stilistischer Neuerungen schuf. Seine Werke brachen in ihrer abstrahierend-gestischen Manier und stilistischen Heterogenität mit den Konventionen der Zeit. Im Katalog wird erstmals eine vertiefende Auseinandersetzung mit Vorbildern und Zeitgenossen Gerstls (u.a. Edvard Munch, Vincent van Gogh, Pierre Bonnard, Lovis Corinth), sowie mit Künstlerinnen und Künstlern der Gegenwart (u.a. Arnulf Rainer, Günter Brus, Martha Jungwirth, Georg Baselitz, Paul McCarthy) angestrebt. Durch die Kontextualisierung von Gerstls Œuvre innerhalb der Kunst des 19., 20. und 21.
