Description
A New Alphabet (In a 21stC Conversation) presents definitions, listed from A-Z of words and phrases that have entered our lives through the adoption of new technologies; and, changing social realities. The book was not intended for students learning to read. A New Alphabet presents a reminder of one-syllable words and pictures associated with the old alphabet, opposite words and phrases from our new changing world, for example, A/Artificial Intelligence, B/Blockchain, C/Climate, D/Debt …R/Robot, T/Temperature, and so on; plus, a glossary that presents definitions of words, phrases and accompanying pictures, many of them related to space and space exploration, topics that will become a greater part of our conversation in the near future. These words include Gravity, Nebulae, Quasars and Void. The words and concepts offer children a peek into new areas that may spark their interest and encourage further exploration.
Excerpt
A is for Artificial Intelligence Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the science and process of making machines that can think and act like humans. This means the machines can recognize and classify images, recognize patterns, recognize and interpret speech, play games, make predictions and make decisions and judgements. The goal is to do good, and advance and enhance benefits to humans, however, there are risks. These can range from the personal to the national and international. On the personal level, invasion of privacy and profiling that supports bias and civil rights violations pose the greatest threats. On the national level, concerns regarding national security, cybersecurity and public health are key; while on the international level, theft and espionage pose significant and grave risks. B is for Blockchain A Blockchain is a database, also known as a ledger, that is made up of programs called scripts. Like other databases, information is entered, stored and accessed, however, information is distributed. This means that multiple copies are saved on a network of computers, and the information must all match exactly. Transactions are stored in blocks that are linked together to form a chain – blockchain. The Blocks record the time and sequence or order that transactions are made, and because the blocks are linked, changes cannot be made after a transaction is complete. Blockchains play a key role in cryptocurrency systems (see note in glossary) because they provide a secure record of transactions. They are also used to secure data so that it cannot be changed. C is for Cloud Computing where the delivery of services like applications, networking, servers, software and storage are completed over the internet (known as the ‘cloud’), instead of using local hard drives (on your computer), and other datacenters to store, access and process data. With cloud computing, material can be accessed from anywhere, using any device with an internet connection. Cl
