Desmond sets O'Connor's thought and work in the broad context of cultural and intellectual history. He argues that her orthodox catholic theology stands at the center of her vision, and provides a metaphysical base from which the fiction evolved. Desmond describes O'Connor's uses of imagery and comedy, of the grotesque and the violent, and relates the works to one another and also to the philosophical and theological roots of their creation.
