Description
Georges Rouault (1871 1958) gehörte zu den Schülern von Gustave Moreau, dem grossen symbolistischen Meister; ähnlich bestimmend für seinen Werdegang war eine Glasmalerlehre bei einem Restaurator für Kirchenfenster. Hier schon entdeckte er für sich die Möglichkeit, das Künstlerische mit dem Religiösen zu verbinden. Rouault war Zeit seines Lebens ein engagierter Künstler, der sich empathisch in das Leiden der Mitmenschen hineinversetzte. Er schildert eine Begegnung mit einem alten Clown und gesteht, dass er sich selber in ihm wiedererkannte. Die Figur des Clowns erscheint früh in seinem Schaffen und steht symbolisch für viele andere bei ihm oft wiederkehrende Typen. Georges Rouault war eine singuläre Erscheinung in seiner Zeit, sein Werk lässt sich keiner Stilrichtung zuordnen. Exhibition: Villa Flora, Winterthur, Switzerland (16.11.12-07.04.13).
